ARNO SCHMIDT
COMPAIGN / PRINT
Arno Schmidt, one of the German post-war writers, lived and worked at Inselstraße 42, Darmstadt, for three years since 1955. At the time in front of his house was an advertising column; this plays a major role in his narration “Tina or about the immortality”.
The 100th anniversary of Arno Schmidt is an occasion for the foundation to create literary points of contact. In Darmstadt, they cooperated with the faculty of design.
Winner of the silver medal “DDC Good Design 16” in the category future.

This cover of the advertising column gave the opportunity to get to know Tina from a completely new side in her store! A collage was created that projects the inside of the kiosk onto the outside of the advertising column. I illustrated parts as well as realized the column.
In addition to the redesigned column, there was an invitation card in an envelope and a sticker edition, limited to 50 pieces, which uses motifs from the collage, I designed.
As an excellent alternative to the game of the German national soccer team against the USA, Tina’s reading in the Zoo-Bar was well attended. The eight readers performed the eight sections of Arno Schmidt narration in their own way, which made the reading a real experience.
The production of the stamps as well as the dots invitation cards were realized by me. The stamp stands for the local lake with its particular shape and the dots represent the house of Arno and the Zoo-Bar. Those invitation cards were individually sent to friends of the Arno Schmidt foundation as well as used as posters and cards to advertise the magnificent gathering.
Meanwhile, at the advertising column: Sara Spröcke and I were collaborating to display more about Arno Schmidt's personalty through his wife Alice Schmidt's eyes.
It is green.
The team says goodbye for a summer break with a display that mainly affects the area surrounding the column and signaling that the kiosk is closed — in a photo shooting with Matthias Dürr, we developed the concept for the summer break as well as realized the invitation card.
To sweeten up the waiting time at the advertising column, we leave books “reading material for the journey” in the former telephone booth as well as a lot of plants and flowers. Tina's kiosk is closed, the column is adorned with a photograph by Prof. Becks from 1969, which shows the traffic island and advertising column with a view of the Schmidt's apartment.
Over 100 guests came to the design department to attend the reading by Jan Philipp Reemtsma, Joachim Kersten and Bernd Rauschenbach. The trio read the texts »Großer Kain« and »Windmühlen« from Arno Schmidt's »Ländliche Erzählungen«. This was the last event of the anniversary year in Darmstadt and for the last time we cordially invited all friends of the project — and of course Arno Schmidt — to spend a sociable evening with us.
Inspired by the two narrations, Leopold Lenzgeiger and I illustrated. Those illustrations we silkscreen printed on the tablecloth and napkins for the event.
For our last advertising column we chose to show Arno Schmidt's empty workspace and his bookshelves. Like his rooms aren't in use anymore our column soon won't be in use either.
At the end of an eventful and exciting project year, a card edition was published, which looks over the project and illuminates the individual stations.
